Discussion of Lone Star Governance Trainings

COMMITTEE ON SCHOOL INITIATIVES: DISCUSSION
STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION: NO ACTION

SUMMARY:
The deputy commissioner of governance will present to the committee developments in opportunities for school board member training, particularly as it relates to the monitoring and assimilation of data on student outcomes.

PREVIOUS BOARD ACTION: The State Board of Education (SBOE) last amended 19 TAC §61.1 effective August 25, 2014.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND SIGNIFICANT ISSUES:
About 7,200 Texans currently serve on the boards of trustees for local school districts. The SBOE has authority over required trainings for board members in accordance with Texas Education Code (TEC), §11.159.
