Overview
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is committed to supporting local educational agencies (LEAs) in their efforts to improve the safety and security of school facilities for staff, students, and visitors. This To the Administrator Addressed serves as a reminder for LEAs to apply for the 2022-2025 School Safety Standards Formula Grant.
2022-2025 School Safety Standards Formula Grant
On November 3, 2022, TEA announced a formula-based grant to support 19 TAC Chapter 61, School Districts, Subchapter CC, Commissioner’s Rules Concerning School Facilities, §61.1031, School Safety Standards. The grant allows for spending on a variety of security-related items identified by the needs of each LEA; however, the grant will come with a requirement that money must first be spent on items necessary to comply with the rule. Once the standards of the rule are met, remaining funds can be spent on other eligible security-related costs as defined in the grant program allowable costs. The grant allows for pre-award for items purchased on or after June 1, 2022.

To date, 995 LEAs have applied for the School Safety Standards Formula Grant, and 218 LEAs remain eligible to apply.

Note: Future announcements will be made related to additional funding opportunities made available by House Bill 3. To apply for future school safety funding, LEAs must submit their 2022-2025 School Safety Standards Formula Grant application on or before August 1, 2023.

On July 27, the agency will post a video on the School Safety webpage that outlines the adopted School Safety Standards (19 TAC §61.1031, School Safety Requirements) and provides an overview of the upcoming School Facilities Grant.
