In the state of Texas charter schools are public schools that operate via contracts with an authorizer such as local school district authorizers or the state authorizing office. The Texas Charter School Authorizing and Administration Division oversees the state's charter portfolio.

News and Events

Update Generation 28 Charter Application Now Open

The Generation 28 Open-Enrollment Charter Application is now available.  Please visit the Applicants page to select the appropriate application.  Each page will include all necessary application materials and information specific to that application.  All prospective applicants must attend at least one Mandatory Information Session to be held on July 22, 2022 and July 29, 2022.  Please visit the Mandatory Information Session webpage for more information and to register.  The submission deadline for the application is November 4, 2022.

Update2022-2023 Campus Calendar Submission

The campus calendar submission portal is now open in the Charter School Tracking System (CSTS) in TEALInstructions are available to aid in the submission of the calendars via the portal.  

Online calendar submissions must be completed by August 31, 2022, for each charter school campus that will operate in the 2022-2023 school year with its own County-District-Campus Number (CDCN).  Please reach out to Melissa Giesberg at melissa.giesberg@tea.texas.gov with any questions.

Update Updated Charter Portfolio Coordinator Assignment

Portfolio coordinators are assigned a portion of the state's charter portfolio and serve as the primary point of contact for their assigned schools when processing amendments and renewal applications. To find out the name of your portfolio coordinator, visit our Amendments page.

Update COVID-19 Guidance for Charter Schools

The TEA has sent guidance specific to charter schools (PDF, 73 KB) to supplement existing information on COVID-19.  This guidance covers topics such as waivers for missed days, establishment of remote learning opportunities, suspension of operations, and funding.  Additional guidance may also be found on the TEA's COVID-19 support and guidance page.

Update Portfolio Page Reminder

Website viewers can now view approved charter amendments and geographic boundaries for each charter on the Portfolio page.
